Sharepoint – “Cannot connect to the configuration database”

I was developing a SharePoint site on my VPC the other the day and I all the sudden started getting the error “Cannot connect to the configuration database”. I did a quick search on the web and I found this Microsoft help article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823287. The article was talking about wss 2.0, but I the information seemed relevant for 3.0 also. I checked out all the settings it mentioned and everything seemed to be setup just fine.

However, while going through their steps I saw something weird in my sql server. The configuration database said “Suspect” next to it. I ran the steps from this blog to restore a suspect database: http://mshehadeh.blogspot.com/2007/09/restoring-sql-server-2005-suspect.html and everything was fixed.

So, if you get the “Cannot connect to the configuration database” error, try following the two links above to fix the issue.
